This book takes as the protagonist the son of a squire in Henan during the Guangxu period. The protagonist has read poetry and books, and with his wisdom and courage, he has gone through the Revolution of 1911, the Northern War, and the Anti-Japanese War. He has dealt with all forces, adheres to neutrality but secretly aids the resistance against Japan, and protects his hometown and prosperity. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the government visited the thatched cottage three times and asked him to come out of the mountain. He declined and returned to seclusion, farming and studying to pass down family traditions. He survived the storm for decades and died in the 1990s, writing a legendary life of a Central Plains gentry that spanned a century.
